How to Use the Emotion Wheel: Two Ways to Build Awareness

The Emotion Wheel can be used in two powerful ways to deepen your understanding and improve your emotional intelligence:

Self-Awareness: Reflective Emotion Processing

Step 1: Identify the Trigger

What caused your emotional reaction in that moment? Pause and reflect.

Step 2: Identify the Core Emotion

What core emotion am I experiencing right now? Pause and feel.

Step 3: Notice Your Body

How do I physically and mentally feel this emotion in my body and mind? Pause and observe.

Step 4: Go One Layer Deeper

What deeper or more specific feelings lie beneath this initial emotion? Pause and explore.

Step 5: Listen to the Message

What is this emotion trying to tell me or protect me from? Pause and understand.

Step 6: Shift to Logic

What is the appropriate and logical response my rational mind suggests? Pause and decide.

Social Awareness: Understanding Others and Yourself

Step 1: Identify Your Emotion

What emotion am I feeling right now? Pause and reflect.

Step 2: Specify the Feeling

What specific feeling is it? Pause and name it.

Step 3: Explore Deeper Feelings

What deeper feeling might be underneath? Pause and explore.

Step 4: Recognize the Trigger

What caused me to feel this way? Pause and consider.

Step 5: Reflect on Perception

How might this emotion affect how I see the other person? Pause and observe.

Step 6: Consider Their Feelings

Given this, what might they be feeling? Pause and empathize.

Step 7: Decide on Response

What is the most helpful response in this moment? Pause and choose thoughtfully.

Use these two approaches with the Emotion Wheel to deepen your emotional awareness, improve communication, and respond thoughtfully in both personal reflection and social interactions.
