Welcome back to the Heart Hotel! Seven-year-old Louie is an excellent Hotel Manager, but today, a very heavy, droopy, and blue guest has arrived at the front desk. Sadness has checked in, and he brought a giant suitcase full of tears!
When Louie's real-world day doesn't go as planned, he feels a heavy lump in his throat and his eyes start to sting. It can be tempting to lock the doors and pretend the blue guest isn't there, but Louie remembers the Golden Rule:
"Every guest is welcome, every guest gets a room, and nobody stays forever."
Instead of pushing Sadness away, Louie bravely guides him to a safe, cozy room. By getting a warm blanket, taking quiet breaths, and allowing himself to have a good cry, Louie learns that it is 100% okay to feel sad.
What little managers will learn in this story:
Identification: Recognizing the heavy, tired, and tearful feeling of sadness in the body.
Acceptance: Understanding that crying is a healthy, safe, and normal way to let big feelings out.
Regulation Tools: Using comforting, quiet strategies (like asking for a hug, resting, or finding a cozy space) to care for themselves when feeling down.
Comfort: Discovering that if you give Sadness a safe place to rest, his heavy suitcase eventually empties, and he peacefully checks out!
