This is Ellie. On the outside, she looks like a regular girl on her way to her favorite gymnastics class. But on the inside, she is a brave and kind Princess who rules over her very own Kingdom of the Heart!

Today, when Ellie opens the doors to the gymnastics studio, her friends and teachers jump out to yell, "Happy Birthday, Ellie!". Inside the Kingdom of the Heart, a tiny, glowing orange Spark-Sprite bursts into the throne room. Surprise has visited, popping loudly like fireworks and covered in tiny explosions of confetti!

In the real world, the sudden loud noise makes Ellie's body feel frozen. Her eyes go wide as dinner plates, and she gasps a tiny gasp, holding her breath. Even when she feels overwhelmed by the popping feeling, Ellie remembers her Royal Decree:

"A wise Princess cares for all her creatures, but she must keep her castle safe."

Instead of chasing or yelling at the bouncy guest, Princess Ellie politely welcomes the Spark-Sprite and guides it to the Glass Observatory. By giving the zooming sparks a safe glass room to pop, taking a breath, and holding her teacher's hand, Ellie unfreezes and is ready to enjoy her amazing birthday bash!

What little leaders will learn in this story:

  • Identification: Recognizing the frozen body, wide eyes, and sudden gasp that come when Surprise arrives.

  • Processing: Understanding that surprises can feel overwhelming or make you freeze at first, even during happy moments like a sudden celebration.

  • Regulation Tools: Using grounding tools (like holding a hand, taking a deep breath, and looking around) to help an overwhelmed body unfreeze.

  • Adaptability: Discovering that once given a safe space to settle down, the popping Surprise sprite eventually shrinks into a tiny confetti speck and flies away!
